Three AM Recon
Maya's phone glowed at 2:47 AM, another notification lighting up her screen like a tiny supernova in the darkness of her room. She should've been asleep – honestly, she should've been asleep three hours ago – but here she was, doomscrolling through Instagram like her life depended on it.
Feeling like a zombie had become her new normal. Junior year was absolutely cooking her, between AP classes, track practice, and the constant low-level anxiety about basically everything. But tonight? Tonight she had a mission.
She was being a total spy.
Not, like, a cool CIA operative spy. More like a "checking if her ex-best-friend-now-popular-girl Chloe had posted anything about the party Maya definitely wasn't invited to" spy. It was pathetic, and Maya knew it was pathetic, but here we were.
A new post popped up. Chloe, grinning with that perfect smile, arm around some new girl from the soccer team. Caption: "found my fox 💕🦊"
Maya felt something twist in her chest. That used to be their inside joke. "Sly as a fox," Chloe would whisper whenever they pulled something over on their parents, back when they were twelve and thought sneaking extra dessert was the height of rebellion.
Now Chloe was dropping fox emojis with girls who'd never known the pre-makeup, pre-popularity version of her.
Maya's thumb hovered over the screen, ready to close the app and maybe throw her phone across the room. But then she saw it – a comment, way down at the bottom, from some random account.
"fox emoji squad? 🔍"
Weird. Maya clicked on the profile. Empty. Just created today. Something felt off.
Her detective instincts (fueled by too many true crime podcasts) kicked in. This wasn't just some random commenter. The timing was too specific.
Wait.
Maya flipped back to Chloe's post. Then to the mystery profile. Then back again.
The profile picture. It was blurry, but... was that Chloe's old stuffed fox? The one she'd "lost" in eighth grade?
Maya's heart did this little skip thing. Either this was the most coincidence-heavy moment in history, or...
Or Chloe was still thinking about her too.
Maybe she hadn't been forgotten in the great popularity upgrade of sophomore year. Maybe some things – inside jokes, shared memories, whatever they'd had – didn't just disappear because friend groups shifted and people changed.
Maya typed out a response, her fingers somehow nervous: "@sly_girl_99 aka whoever this is... that fox looks familiar 🦊"
A minute later (but what felt like forever): "Thought you'd catch that. Miss you, idiot. 💕"
The zombie feeling lifted, just a little. Sometimes being a spy paid off.
