Three AM Hat Thief
Maya felt like a zombie, but not the cool movie kind. More like the exhausted-by-11th-grade kind, where existing took more energy than she had. She'd been lying in bed for two hours, doomscrolling through Instagram, playing spy in everyone else's lives.
That's when she saw it: Jayden's story. Her crush since September, wearing a beanie she'd never seen before, tagged at some party she wasn't invited to. Again.
Her finger hovered over the screen. This was her superpower and her curse—being a digital spy, knowing everything about everyone while nobody really knew her. She knew Jayden's coffee order, his dog's name, his post-breakup playlist. She knew he'd started wearing that hat every day this week.
"What are you doing?" Maya whispered to herself. "This is creepy."
But then another thought hit her: what if she stopped watching and started being?
Her brother's old snapback sat on his desk. A dusty green thing with some skateboard logo. Before she could talk herself out of it, Maya grabbed it and pulled it low over her hair. Something shifted. She felt different. Protected. Like the hat was armor against all the times she'd felt invisible.
She grabbed her phone and snapped a mirror selfie. Caption: "new era who dis"
Her hands shook as she posted it. This wasn't her. Maya didn't do new eras. Maya didn't call attention to herself. But zombie-Maya, the one who was tired of her own safety, did.
Three minutes later, her phone buzzed.
Jayden: "that's my brother's hat lol"
Maya: "wait WHAT"
Jayden: "he lost it at the party last night. small world??"
They were DMing. They were actually talking. And okay, maybe the universe had a weird sense of humor, but sometimes the wrong hat could lead to the right moment. Maya wasn't just watching anymore.
"Okay," she thought, pulling the hat lower. "New era it is."
