Three A.M. Papaya Runs

The orange glow of the streetlamp flickered against my bedroom window as I crept down the stairs at 2:47 AM. First time sneaking out, and obviously it was for groceries. My phone buzzed.

"u coming?" – Sam's text lit up the screen.

"yes omw" – I replied, triple-checking that my mom was still asleep.

The plan: perfect breakfast for Maya before first period. She'd mentioned liking papaya, which was random af but whatever. I'd spent $12.97 on the most perfect papaya in existence, plus organic spinach because Sam said "girls eat healthy now" and honestly, I was desperate.

The cat—Ms. Whitaker's massive white monstrosity—sprawled across the sidewalk like it owned the neighborhood. I stepped around it carefully.

"Nice moves, assassins," Sam whispered from behind the convenience store. "You got the goods?"

I held up the papaya like it was contraband. "This is it. This is the moment."

Sam snorted. "Bro, it's fruit. Chill."

We sat on the curb, spinning this elaborate fantasy where Maya would see me eating healthy and just... fall in love? The logic wasn't great, but we were fifteen and desperate.

Then the cat appeared again, padding silently toward us. It sat directly in front of my papaya and stared.

"That's weirdly aggressive," I said.

The cat knocked the papaya into the gutter with one deliberate paw. My perfect plan, literally rolling away into storm drain water.

"DUDE," Sam yelled.

But then—just as suddenly—the cat nudged my phone toward me. Maya had posted: "if someone wants to get boba later hmu"

Sam looked at me. Then at the gutter papaya. Then at me again.

"So..." He grinned. "Wanna just get boba instead?"

The cat sauntered off like it had just changed my entire life. Which, honestly? It kind of had. Sometimes the universe destroys your perfect spinach-papaya breakfast plan to remind you that real connections aren't about grand gestures anyway. They're about showing up, even at three in the morning, even when things go wrong.

"Yeah," I said. "Let's go."
