The Zompkin's Secret
Lily's pet goldfish Fin was magical. He could swim through the air like water, his orange scales sparkling like tiny suns. One warm afternoon, Fin swam circles around Lily's head, nudging her toward the garden.
"Follow me!" Fin seemed to say, darting between the papaya trees. Their fruits glowed golden in the sunlight, ripe and sweet. Lily's grandmother grew the most delicious papayas in the world.
But today, something strange was happening. As Lily followed Fin deeper into the garden, she noticed movement beneath the papaya leaves. Something was shuffling toward her—slowly, clumsily.
Lily gasped. It looked like a zombie! But instead of being scary, it was a little creature made of vines and flowers, with petals for eyes and a smile made of rose petals. It was a garden zombie, friendly and curious.
"Hello," Lily whispered. The creature stopped and pointed at the papaya tree. Then it began dancing—swimming through the air just like Fin!
"You're lonely too," Lily realized. She picked a papaya and shared it with the creature. Its eyes lit up. It had been sleeping for years, waiting for a friend.
Fin swam between them, his orange scales shimmering. The garden zombie wasn't scary at all—it was magical, just like everything else in her grandmother's garden.
From that day on, Lily visited her new friend every afternoon. They ate papayas together, watched Fin swim through the air, and discovered that sometimes the scariest-looking things are just the most lonely ones, waiting for someone to say hello.
And that, Lily learned, was the real magic of friendship.
