The Zombie With Rainbow Hair

Lily loved exploring the magical island behind her house. Every day after school, she'd follow the path lined with swaying palm trees until she reached the secret beach where the sand sparkled like tiny diamonds.

One afternoon, Lily noticed something strange near her favorite palm tree. A small figure was sitting in the sand, hiding behind a coconut.

"Hello?" Lily called out softly.

The figure jumped. It was a zombie—but not like the scary ones in movies. This zombie was small, with greenish skin and the biggest, saddest eyes Lily had ever seen.

"Please don't run," the zombie said in a shaky voice. "I promise I'm not scary."

Lily stayed right where she was. "I'm Lily. What's your name?"

"I'm Z," the zombie whispered, still hiding.

"Why are you hiding?" Lily asked, sitting down in the sand.

Z hesitated, then slowly turned around. Lily gasped—but not in fear. Z's hair was amazing! It wasn't green and creepy like zombie hair was supposed to be. It was rainbow-colored, with soft pink curls, blue waves, and purple twists that shimmered in the sunlight.

"My hair is weird," Z said sadly. "Other zombies made fun of me. That's why I came here alone."

Lily reached out her hand, palm open and friendly. "Your hair isn't weird, Z. It's magical! It's like a beautiful sunset all caught up in curls."

Z's eyes grew wide. "You really think so?"

"I know so," Lily said firmly. "Want to see something?" She pulled two bright flowers from behind her ear—ones she'd picked earlier. "Let's make your hair even more beautiful."

Together, Lily and Z wove flowers into his rainbow curls. They laughed and talked all afternoon. Z told Lily how much he loved collecting pretty shells and how he secretly wanted to be an artist.

"You know," Lily said as the sun began to set, "being different isn't bad. It just means you're special."

Z smiled, and for the first time, he didn't hide his rainbow hair. "Thank you, Lily. For being my friend."

"Thank you for showing me your beautiful self," Lily replied.

They met by the palm tree every day after that. And whenever other zombies or kids stared at Z's colorful hair, he just smiled. He knew that true friends love you for who you are—even when you're wonderfully, beautifully different.
