The Zombie Who Wasn't Scary

Lily loved adventures. Every day after school, she explored the magical forest behind her house. She knew every tree, every flower, every secret path.

One afternoon, Lily saw something strange. A figure shuffled between the trees. It had wild orange hair that stuck up like sunshine. Its clothes were tattered and muddy.

"A zombie!" Lily gasped, hiding behind an oak tree.

But then the "zombie" stopped. It wasn't groaning or looking for brains. Instead, it carefully picked a fallen baby bird and placed it back in its nest. It straightened crooked flowers so they could grow tall again.

Lily stepped out from behind her tree. "You're not a zombie, are you?"

The figure turned around. It was a girl about Lily's age, with the brightest orange hair Lily had ever seen. "No," the girl said shyly. "I'm Clementine. I got lost in the woods for three days, and I look messy, but I'm not scary."

"I'm Lily," Lily said with a smile. "And you need a friend."

Together, they explored the forest. Clementine knew amazing things — which berries made the sweetest jam, which trees had the best climbing branches, where the prettiest flowers grew.

"My orange hair isn't just orange," Clementine said. "It catches sunlight so baby birds can find their way home in the dark."

That was when Lily understood. Clementine wasn't messy or scary. She was magical.

The other kids in town had been afraid of Clementine too. They called her names and stayed away. But after that day, Lily and Clementine became best friends. They showed everyone that someone who looks different might be the most wonderful person you'll ever meet.

And sometimes, the scariest-looking things turn out to be the most beautiful — if you're brave enough to say hello.
