The Zombie Who Wasn't Scary

Leo pressed his cardboard spy badge to his chest and tiptoed through the backyard. His dog Barnaby, a fluffy golden retriever, wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. They were on a secret mission.

"Shh, Barnaby," Leo whispered. "We're spies now. We have to be quiet."

Something rustled in the bushes behind the old oak tree. Leo's eyes went wide. A slow figure emerged—arms stiff, walking with a lurching step. Leo gasped. It was a zombie!

But this zombie didn't look scary. She was about Leo's age, with wild purple hair and mismatched socks. She stopped and stared at them with wide eyes.

"I'm not a zombie," she said, reading Leo's mind. "I'm practicing for the school play. I'm a dancing zombie."

Leo lowered his pretend spy glass. "You're pretty good."

The girl grinned. "I'm Maya. Want to see my zombie dance?" She did a silly wobbly dance that made Barnaby bark with delight.

Soon all three of them were dancing—Leo, Maya, and Barnaby spinning in circles. They played spy games together, hiding behind trees and whispering secret codes. Maya showed Leo her collection of smooth rocks, each one painted like a tiny planet. Leo shared his favorite climbing spot in the oak tree.

"Best spy mission ever," Leo said as the sun began to set.

"Yeah," Maya agreed. "Making friends is better than any mission."

Barnaby flopped down between them, tongue out, tail thumping happily against the grass. The three new friends watched the first stars appear, knowing that tomorrow would bring more adventures together—because the best discoveries aren't monsters or mysteries. They're friends waiting to be found.
