The Zombie Who Wasn't

Lily loved running through her grandmother's garden, her curly hair bouncing like springs. Every afternoon, she'd race past the papaya trees, their golden fruits glowing like sunbeams caught in leaves.

But today something strange happened. From behind the biggest papaya tree, a figure staggered out. It moved slowly, arms stiff, groaning softly.

"A zombie!" Lily gasped, freezing mid-run.

The figure shuffled closer, and Lily spotted something—two pointy ears, a long tail, and whiskers twitching. It wasn't a zombie at all.

"Mew?" said the figure.

Lily gasped. "Grandma's cat? But you're..."

Whiskers was usually the sleekest, most graceful cat in the neighborhood. Today, she looked terrible. Her beautiful white fur was sticky with papaya juice. She'd clearly been exploring the garden's forbidden section.

"You ate all those papayas!" Lily giggled. "You're not a zombie—you're just a papaya-monster!"

Whiskers looked at her with yellow eyes full of apology. Behind the tree, Lily spotted fallen papayas everywhere, some half-eaten.

"Oh, Whiskers," Lily said gently. "Grandma said these weren't ripe yet. But look at you—you're a mess!"

Instead of scolding, Lily did something wonderful. She filled a bucket with warm water from the garden hose and gently washed Whiskers clean. The cat purred like a motorboat, grateful for the help.

"I won't tell Grandma," Lily promised, scratching behind Whiskers's clean ears. "But next time, let's try mangoes instead. They're much easier to eat!"

That evening, when Grandma asked about her missing papayas, Lily and Whiskers exchanged a secret glance. Sometimes the scariest things turn out to be our friends, just covered in sticky fruit juice.
