The Zombie Who Wanted to Swim
Ten-year-old Maya sat by the swimming pool, dangling her feet in the cool blue water. Suddenly, something green and lumpy shuffled out from behind the bushes. Maya gasped—it was a zombie! But this zombie didn't want brains. It just stood there, looking sadly at the sparkling pool.
"I'm Frankie," the zombie mumbled. "I'm lonely. Everyone runs away from me."
Maya noticed tears in the zombie's eyes. "I won't run away," she said. "Why are you looking at the pool?"
"I want to swim," Frankie said. "But zombies are heavy. We sink like stones."
Maya's friend Leo arrived, carrying his older brother's waterproof iPhone. "What's going on?" he asked, eyes wide.
"Frankie wants to swim!" Maya explained. "But zombies are too heavy."
Leo's face lit up. "Maybe science can help!" He opened an app on the iPhone and started typing. "If we calculate zombie density versus water buoyancy..."
Suddenly, the sky darkened. CRACK! Lightning flashed overhead, striking a metal diving board nearby. Sparks flew everywhere—and some landed on Frankie!
"Oh no!" Maya cried. But Frankie wasn't hurt. Instead, the lightning had done something magical. The zombie's heavy green skin started glowing, becoming lighter and lighter.
"I feel... bubbly!" Frankie said, jumping up and down.
"In the pool!" Maya shouted.
Frankie leaped into the water—and floated! The lightning's magic had made the zombie lighter than air. Frankie splashed and laughed, doing happy underwater somersaults.
Maya and Leo jumped in too. They played for hours, until the sun set behind the hills. Before leaving, Frankie promised to return every day.
"Nobody needs to be lonely forever," Maya said as they walked home.
That night, Maya learned something wonderful: sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures just need a friend, a little science, and a touch of magic. And she had made the best friend ever—a zombie who could finally swim.
