The Zombie Who Wanted to Play Baseball

Lily found the old green hat in her grandmother's attic. It smelled like sunshine and secrets. When she placed it on her toy zombie's head, something magical happened.

Zombie Zed, who usually sat stiffly on her shelf, suddenly blinked his button eyes.

"I've always wanted to play baseball," Zed said in a rusty but friendly voice.

Lily's eyes widened. "But you're made of stuffing and thread! And you're a zombie!"

"That doesn't mean I can't dream," Zed said. "Besides, I take my vitamin every day. It keeps my buttons shiny and my stitching strong."

Lily giggled. She'd never heard of a zombie taking vitamins before!

Outside, her friends were playing padel in the driveway. The ball hit the racket with satisfying pops. But Lily had a better idea.

"Let's play baseball!" she called. "Zed's on my team!"

Her best friend Maya raised an eyebrow. "A zombie? At baseball?"

"He's been practicing for fifty years in his imagination," Lily said. "That's a lot of mental training."

Zed proved her right. Though his arms were stuffed with cotton, his determination was real. The magical hat gave him just enough spring in his step. When it was his turn to bat, he closed his button eyes and swung with all his heart.

*CRACK!*

The ball soared over the fence. Everyone cheered—even the dog, who usually barked at scary things.

"See?" Lily whispered, touching the brim of the magical hat. "Everyone deserves a chance to play."

That day, Zombie Zed taught them something wonderful: being different doesn't mean you can't belong. And sometimes, the most unlikely friends make the best teammates.

Lily kept the magical hat safe, just in case other toys had big dreams too.
