The Zombie Who Wanted to Play

Lily loved her toy zombie, Zippy, even though he was missing an ear and had green paint peeling off his face. Every night, she tucked him into her dollhouse beside her cat, Mittens, and whispered, "Goodnight, friends."

One midnight, when the moon hung like a silver coin, Lily woke to whispers. She peeked through her eyelashes and gasped—Zippy was moving! His stitched smile stretched wide as he dusted off his toy chest.

"Mittens!" Zippy called softly. "Felix is waiting!"

Lily's orange cat stretched, then trotted to the window. A red fox with the fluffiest tail Lily had ever seen waited on the garden fence.

"Are we playing spy tonight?" Felix asked, bouncing like a puppy.

"Exactly!" Zippy said, climbing onto the windowsill. "We spy on the magic garden!"

Lily couldn't believe it—her toy zombie was alive! Her cat was friends with a fox! And they were going on adventures without her!

She crept downstairs in her fuzzy slippers. When Zippy spotted her, he froze like a regular toy again.

"I won't tell," Lily promised. "Can I come?"

Zippy's plastic eyes twinkled. "Only if you're brave enough to spy on fairies!"

That night, Lily learned something magical: Zippy had been lonely in the toy chest, only coming alive at night because he thought children would be scared of a zombie who wanted to play. Mittens and Felix had found him crying months ago and became his first real friends.

Together, the four of them watched fireflies dance in patterns that spelled secret messages. They saw tiny unicorns drinking from puddles. They discovered that the garden was alive with magic, visible only to those who believed in impossible things.

"You're my best friend," Zippy told Lily, hugging her finger with his tiny plastic hand. "Even though I'm just a zombie who wanted to play."

"And you're mine," Lily said, kissing his green forehead.

From then on, Lily understood that friends come in all shapes—even ones with missing ears and painted smiles. Every night, she, Zippy, Mittens, and Felix spied on magic together, and Lily learned that the best adventures are the ones shared with friends who love you for exactly who you are.
