The Zombie Who Wanted to Play
Lily loved Halloween. She loved the costumes, the candy, and especially the magic that seemed to fill the air. But this year, something strange was happening in her backyard.
Every night, she heard a soft groaning sound coming from behind the old oak tree. Her brother said it was a zombie, but Lily wasn't scared. She was curious.
One afternoon, she peeked behind the tree and gasped. There, sitting in the colorful autumn leaves, was a little green creature with messy, tangled hair that stuck up like a bird's nest. It was the most pathetic zombie she had ever seen.
"Are you lost?" Lily asked gently.
The zombie looked up with sad, purple eyes. "Everyone runs away from me," it said. "I just want to make friends."
Lily's dog, Buster, came bounding over. Instead of barking or running away, Buster wagged his tail happily and licked the zombie's face. The zombie giggled, and its wild hair bounced with joy.
"Buster likes you," Lily said smiling. "What's your name?"
"Zed," the zombie replied. "But I'm not scary, I promise. I just look different."
Lily thought for a moment. "I know! We can fix your hair, and then you'll look friendlier!"
She ran inside and came back with brushes and ribbons. Together, she and Buster helped Zed tame his crazy hair. They braided it with colorful ribbons and put flowers in it. When they finished, Zed looked wonderful.
That night, Lily invited Zed to go trick-or-treating with her. At first, people were scared, but when they saw how friendly Zed was and how much fun he was having, they started giving him extra candy.
"See?" Lily whispered as they walked home under the bright full moon. "Being different isn't bad. Sometimes, it just means you need someone who understands you."
Zed smiled, his braided hair shining in the moonlight. He had found the best friends ever: a brave girl named Lily and a dog who knew that true friendship comes from the heart, not from how you look.
