The Zombie Who Wanted to Play
Leo was running through the magical forest, his messy hair bouncing with every step. He was playing tag with the invisible fairies he imagined lived in the tall oak trees. Suddenly, he heard a strange sound.
"Groooaaan..."
Leo hid behind a palm tree and peeked around. To his surprise, he saw a small green creature shuffling slowly toward him. It had buttons for eyes and stitches across its chest. It looked like a zombie, but not a scary one – more like a stuffed animal that had come to life!
The zombie stopped and held out its hand, palm open. Inside was a beautiful red marble that glowed like a tiny moon.
"For you," the zombie said softly. "I'm Button. I've been looking for a friend."
Leo's eyes went wide. "You're not scary!"
Button shook its stuffed head. "No, I'm made of wishes and magic. But the other toys were afraid of how I look."
Just then, a magnificent bull with golden horns stepped out from behind a bush. The bull lowered its head threateningly.
"Run!" Leo grabbed Button's hand, and they ran together, dodging between trees. But Button tripped on its own clumsy feet.
Leo didn't keep running. He turned back and helped Button up. "Friends don't leave friends behind."
The bull stepped closer... and smiled. It wasn't a bull at all, but the Guardian of the Forest, testing Leo's heart.
"You passed," the Guardian said. "True friends help each other."
Leo and Button became best friends, running through the forest every day, playing hide-and-seek with the fairies. And Leo learned that sometimes, the scariest-looking things just need someone to see who they really are inside.
