The Zombie Who Wanted to Hug
Maya squeezed her stuffed zombie toy. Its green button eyes looked lonely.
"Don't worry, Zombelina," she whispered. "Tomorrow is Halloween. You'll make friends."
Her cat, Professor Whiskers, purred and bumped his head against her hand. He knew exactly how she felt.
Maya had just moved to a new town. The houses here were tall and twisty, like something from a storybook. But nobody had waved hello yet.
That night, Maya discovered something magical behind the old bookshelf: a glittering cable that sparkled like captured starlight. It pulsed with soft, warm light.
"What do you suppose it does?" Maya wondered aloud.
Professor Whiskers batted at the floating end of the cable. When it touched Zombelina's stuffed foot, something amazing happened.
The zombie toy stretched! She blinked her button eyes and smiled a crooked, friendly smile.
"Friend?" Zombelina asked softly. Her voice sounded like autumn leaves crunching happily.
Maya gasped. "You're alive!"
"Want friend," Zombelina said shyly. "Not scary. Just lonely."
Professor Whiskers purred and rubbed against Zombelina's leg. The zombie's face lit up with joy.
The magical cable pulsed brighter, then stretched out the window, down the street, and into another house. A girl about Maya's age peeked out her window, holding her own stuffed toy.
"Is that... a zombie?" the girl called. "I'm Lily! This is Mr. Bones!"
Mr. Bones, a skeleton toy, waved his bony hand.
"I'm Maya! This is Zombelina!"
The cable had connected them - future best friends.
They met at the fence between their houses. Zombelina and Mr. Bones became instant friends too. Professor Whiskers approved, purring loudly as all four of them sat together watching the first autumn stars appear.
Maya learned something important that night: Sometimes the things that seem different or scary on the outside just want a friend on the inside. And friendship, like the magical cable, can connect hearts in the most unexpected ways.
The next morning, the cable had faded into sparkles. But Maya didn't need magic anymore. She had Lily, Zombelina had Mr. Bones, and Professor Whiskers had everyone to cuddle.
Sometimes, the best adventures start with being brave enough to say hello.
