The Zombie Who Wanted to Dance

friendrunningzombie

Lily was new in town and hadn't made a single friend yet. Every day after school, she walked past the old playground alone, wishing someone would ask her to play. One afternoon, she noticed something strange near the rusty swing set—a boy moving in a funny, stiff way, almost like a robot that needed oiling.

His name was Toby, and kids called him a zombie because he walked so slowly and rarely spoke. Lily saw something different. She saw someone who moved to his own special rhythm, like a dance no one else understood.

"Want to race?" Lily called out, smiling.

Toby's eyes lit up. For the first time, he started running—and he was fast! They ran laps around the playground until they were both breathless and giggling. That afternoon, they became the best of friends.

Lily discovered that Toby moved slowly because he was always observing beautiful things others missed: butterflies dancing in the grass, clouds shaped like dragons, the secret lives of ants. When he shared what he saw, the world became magical.

Other children noticed how much fun Lily and Toby had. Soon, they joined in, learning to slow down and see wonder everywhere. The zombie boy had taught them all something important: true friends accept you exactly as you are, and sometimes the person who seems different is actually the most wonderful friend of all.

Lily no longer walked alone. She had found something better than a playmate—a friend who showed her that moving at your own pace and seeing the world differently was a gift, not a weakness.
