The Zombie Who Wanted a Friend

Lily skipped along the sparkling beach, her golden dog Buster trotting happily beside her. The sun painted the sky in shades of pink and gold as they made their way toward their favorite spot under the swaying palm tree.

"Look, Buster!" Lily cried, pointing to something half-buried in the sand. She dug eagerly and pulled out a perfectly round, bright orange fruit. "It's a magic orange! Grandma said these grant wishes!"

Buster barked and danced in circles, his tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled.

Lily peeled the orange and shared segments with Buster. The juice was sweet and tangy, making them both laugh. But as they enjoyed their treat, they heard a strange sound from behind the palm tree.

"Grooooooan," came the noise.

Lily peeked around the tree and gasped. A green-faced figure shuffled slowly through the sand. Its arms stretched out stiffly, and its eyes looked sad and lonely.

"A zombie!" Lily whispered, remembering scary stories from her older brother. But this zombie didn't look scary — it looked like it needed a friend.

The zombie noticed them and stopped, looking frightened. It pointed at the orange peel in Lily's hand.

"You're... hungry?" Lily asked. The zombie nodded slowly.

Lily's heart melted. She'd never seen a zombie before, but this one seemed different. Its eyes were kind, just lonely. She remembered what her mother always said: "Never judge someone by how they look. True friends are found in the kindest hearts."

"Would you like an orange?" Lily offered gently. "We have more!"

The zombie's face lit up. As it ate, something magical happened. Its green skin turned rosy and healthy, its stiff arms relaxed, and it began to smile.

"Thank you," the zombie said in a surprisingly warm voice. "I'm not really a zombie. I'm Zara, and I was under a grumpy spell. I needed someone's kindness to break it."

Buster licked Zara's hand, and she giggled.

"Want to play?" Lily asked.

For the rest of the afternoon, Lily, Buster, and Zara splashed in the cool ocean water, built sandcastles, and collected seashells. The magic orange had brought them together, but friendship had broken the spell.

As the sun began to set, Zara hugged Lily. "Thank you for seeing me, not just what I looked like. You taught me that kindness is the strongest magic of all."

Lily waved goodbye as Zara danced away across the beach, no longer shambling but skipping joyfully. Some people might say zombies were scary, but Lily knew better. Sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just needed a little orange and a lot of love.
