The Zombie Who Swam with Whiskers
Lily's cat Whiskers was the most curious cat in the world. Every night, while the house slept, Whiskers would creep through the cat flap to explore. One moonlit night, Lily followed him.
They arrived at the old swimming pool behind the abandoned house. The pool hadn't been used in years, but tonight it glowed with a soft, mysterious blue light. Whiskers jumped onto the edge and meowed at something in the water.
To Lily's wonder, a small goldfish popped to the surface. But this was no ordinary goldfish—it shimmered with rainbow scales that changed color as it moved. The goldfish spoke!
"Hello, friend!" said the goldfish in a bubbly voice. "I've been waiting for you. The magic pool only reveals itself to those with pure hearts."
Suddenly, the water rippled. Up rose not a scary monster, but a gentle zombie—a small, green boy with stitches on his friendly face and flowers tucked into his pockets. He smiled, and his smile was kind.
"I'm Zed!" the zombie said. "Don't worry—I'm not scary. I'm the guardian of this magical pool, where dreams come to swim."
Zed explained that he had once been a lonely boy who wished for friends. The magic pool had transformed him into its guardian, and now he helped others find friendship too.
"Jump in!" said Zed. "The pool is filled with moonwater, and you can breathe underwater!"
Lily and Whiskers leaped in together. The water felt like floating in cool liquid silver. All around them, goldfish played tag, leaving trails of glitter. Whiskers purred so loudly that bubbles floated from his mouth.
"You see," said Zed, swimming beside them, "sometimes the things we think are scary are actually wonderful. We just need to be brave enough to say hello."
They played until dawn, racing goldfish and having underwater tea parties. As the sun began to rise, Zed gave Lily a single rainbow scale from the goldfish.
"Whenever you feel lonely," he whispered, "hold this scale and think of our pool. We'll be swimming here, waiting for our friend."
Lily and Whiskers crept back home just as Lily's parents woke up. From that night on, Lily learned that the best adventures come from being curious and kind. And sometimes, the most unexpected friends become the best ones of all.
Now, whenever Lily sees a cat, a pool, or even a goldfish, she smiles—remembering the zombie who taught her that magic exists for those brave enough to look for it.
