The Zombie Who Swam with Lightning
Lily loved her backyard pool. Every summer evening, she would go swimming until her toes wrinkled like raisins. But tonight was different—thunder rumbled in the distance.
"Time to come inside, sweetie!" her mom called. "There's a storm coming!"
Lily climbed out, dripping wet, and grabbed her towel. That's when she saw him—a pale green figure with messy hair, standing by the pool fence. He looked like a zombie from movies, but he was wearing bright orange swim trunks and a floppy sun hat.
"Are you... a zombie?" Lily whispered, clutching her iphone.
The zombie smiled crookedly. "I'm Zed! I'm not a scary zombie—I'm a swimming zombie! Watch this!"
Zed jumped into the pool with a splash. But instead of swimming normally, he did the slowest, funniest doggy paddle Lily had ever seen. His arms moved in slow motion, his legs kicked lazily, and he made silly zombie noises: "Gurgle... splish... blurp..."
Lily giggled so hard she almost dropped her iphone.
Suddenly, a crack of lightning flashed across the sky. The pool water glowed with magical blue light.
"The lightning makes the pool magic!" Zed exclaimed. "Quick, come swimming!"
Lily's mom had warned her never to swim during a storm, but this felt like a dream. She dipped her toes in the glowing water. Instantly, she felt light and floaty, like she could swim forever.
"You're a natural zombie swimmer!" Zed cheered.
They raced—Zed doing his slow-motion zombie stroke, Lily zooming like a mermaid. Lightning flashed again, and for a moment, Lily saw sparkles dancing on the water's surface.
Too soon, the storm moved away. The magic faded. Zed climbed out, shaking water from his sun hat.
"Will I ever see you again?" Lily asked.
"Whenever there's lightning and a pool," Zed winked, "I'll be here. But remember—real swimming only when it's safe!" He pointed to her iphone. "Check the weather app first!"
"I promise!" Lily said.
The next morning, Lily checked her weather app. No storms for a week. But she smiled at the pool, knowing that somewhere, a friendly zombie was waiting for the next lightning storm—and another magical swimming adventure.
