The Zombie Who Saved the Garden
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's farm, especially the old swimming pool at the bottom of the garden. It hadn't held water in years, but it was full of the most amazing things—wildflowers, butterflies, and a family of bright orange goldfish that somehow lived in a tiny puddle that never dried up.
One moonlit night, Lily heard a strange sound coming from the garden. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
She peeked through her window and gasped. A zombie was stumbling through the vegetables! It was green and lumpy, with vines for hair and leaves for hands.
Lily grabbed her flashlight and rushed outside. "Stop! Don't eat my grandmother's garden!"
The zombie froze. It turned slowly, and Lily saw its face—a gentle, sleepy face with eyes like polished chestnuts.
"I'm not eating," the zombie rumbled softly. "I'm planting."
"Planting? At night?"
"Daytime is too hot for my seeds," said the zombie, whose name turned out to be Zummy. "I grow magical vegetables. Want to see?"
Zummy led Lily to a secret patch behind the old pool. There grew glowing spinach that shimmered like stars.
"One leaf gives you sweet dreams," Zummy explained. "Two leaves make you brave. Three leaves... well, three leaves let you talk to animals."
Suddenly, a snort echoed from the barn. A massive bull appeared at the fence. His name was Barnaby, and he looked grumpy.
"Barnaby can't sleep," Zummy said worriedly. "He has bad dreams about storms."
Lily remembered the spinach. She picked three leaves and bravely approached the fence. "Here, Barnaby," she whispered. "These might help."
The bull ate the leaves from her hand. His eyes widened. "Little girl," he said in a deep, rumbly voice. "Thank you. I haven't slept well since the big thunderstorm last summer."
"We can be friends," Lily said. "All of us."
And so they were. Every night, Lily, Zummy the garden zombie, Barnaby the bull, and the magic goldfish (who could jump over the moon) had adventures together. They planted rainbow flowers, chased fireflies, and told stories under the stars.
Lily learned that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures have the kindest hearts. And that friendship, like magic spinach, grows in the most unexpected places.
The end.
