The Zombie Who Saved Goldfish Pond

Lily loved the old pond behind her house. Every day after school, she'd visit her friends — the orange goldfish who lived there. She'd sit on the mossy bank, her red hair in two messy braids, watching them sparkle like living jewels in the water.

One rainy afternoon, Lily found something strange. A green figure rose from the pond, dripping wet, with seaweed hanging from its arms like shaggy hair. It looked like a zombie from her storybooks!

But this zombie didn't want to eat brains. It wanted to go swimming.

"Hello," said the zombie, whose name turned out to be Zebb. "Would you like to see the magical kingdom below?"

Zebb wasn't scary at all. He was a guardian spirit, waking up once every hundred years to protect the pond. And right now, something was wrong.

"The goldfish are trapped," Zebb explained sadly. "The water's becoming too shallow. They can't reach the secret tunnel to their winter home."

Lily's eyes widened. "We have to help them!"

Zebb smiled — a crooked, kind smile. "I can carry you through the water. You won't even need to hold your breath."

Hand in hand with Zebb, Lily dove into the pond. But she didn't need to swim. Zebb's magic surrounded her like a bubble, and suddenly she could breathe underwater!

They found the goldfish huddled together sadly. The tunnel entrance was blocked by fallen branches and old junk people had thrown in the pond. Working together, Lily and Zebb cleared the passage. The goldfish danced with joy, their orange scales gleaming like tiny suns.

"Thank you!" bubbled the largest goldfish. "You saved us!"

That day, Lily learned something important: Sometimes things that seem scary are actually friends in disguise. And anyone — even a little girl and a zombie — can work together to make the world better.

Every year, Lily returns to swim with Zebb and visit her goldfish friends. Her hair still has those same red braids, and her heart is full of magic and kindness.
