The Zombie Who Purred
Lily was playing in her garden when something strange shuffled out from behind the old oak tree. It had greenish-gray skin, messy hair that stuck up like a bundle of dry leaves, and clothes that looked like they'd been slept in for a hundred years. But the strangest thing was that it was holding a bouquet of wildflowers.
A zombie! In Lily's garden! Lily's cat, Whiskers, puffed up like a fluffy orange balloon and let out a tiny "mew" that sounded more like a question than a scare.
The zombie jumped at the sound, nearly dropping his flowers. "S-s-sorry," he said, his voice sounding like autumn leaves crunching. "I-I-I didn't mean to scare anyone. I just... I just wanted to give these to your cat."
Lily blinked. "To Whiskers?"
"He looked lonely," the zombie said, shuffling his feet. "And I know what lonely feels like. Everyone runs away when they see me. But your cat... he just watched me from the window. He seemed curious."
Whiskers, realizing the zombie meant no harm, cautiously approached and sniffed the flowers. Then, to Lily's amazement, he rubbed against the zombie's leg and purred so loudly it sounded like a little motor.
The zombie's face lit up like someone had turned on a light inside him. "He likes me!" he said, his voice getting stronger. "My name is Z-z-zack, by the way."
"I'm Lily," she said, smiling. "And this is Whiskers. Do you want to play?"
Zack's eyes widened. "Nobody's ever asked me that before. They always run away screaming."
"That's because they don't know you like Whiskers does," Lily said wisely. "Whiskers is a very good judge of character. If he says you're a friend, then you're a friend."
That afternoon, Lily, Zack, and Whiskers played the most wonderful games. Zack was surprisingly gentle for someone who looked so scary, and Whiskers decided that Zack made an excellent climbing tree. By the time the sun began to set, Lily had learned something important: sometimes the scariest-looking people just need a friend to see who they really are.
"Come back tomorrow?" Lily asked as Zack prepared to leave.
"Really?" Zack asked, his eyes twinkling like stars. "You want me to come back?"
"Of course!" Lily said. "That's what friends do. They come back."
As Zack shuffled away with the biggest smile Lily had ever seen, Whiskers let out a satisfied purr. Some friendships, Lily decided, are just meant to be - even the ones that start with a zombie holding flowers for a cat.
