The Zombie Who Played Baseball
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his glove and head to the old oak tree behind his house. But nobody wanted to play with him because he lived near the mysterious graveyard.
One sunny afternoon, Leo sat under a swaying palm tree, tossing his baseball up and catching it. Suddenly, a clever little fox popped out from behind the tree!
"I'll play with you!" the fox said, her orange fur gleaming in the sunlight. "But first, you must solve my riddle."
Leo nodded excitedly. The fox's eyes twinkled as she spoke: "I have wings but cannot fly. I have a lion's body but I'm no lion. What am I?"
Leo thought hard. "A sphinx!"
"Correct!" the fox cheered. "Follow me!"
She led him through the graveyard to an ancient stone sphinx half-buried in leaves. The sphinx's stone eyes suddenly opened, glowing with golden light.
"Young one," the sphinx rumbled kindly, "your pure heart has awakened me. For fifty years, I've waited for someone who sees beyond appearances."
From behind the sphinx stepped a small green figure—a zombie! But this zombie wore a tattered baseball cap and held a dusty old bat.
"I'm Ziggy," the zombie said shyly. "I died during the championship game in 1972. I just want to play one more inning."
Leo wasn't scared. "Grab your glove, Ziggy! We've got a game to play!"
The fox, sphinx, Leo, and Ziggy played baseball until sunset. The sphinx used her wings as outfield, the fox was the fastest runner ever, and Ziggy hit home runs that magically sparkled as they flew.
As stars appeared, the sphinx smiled. "Friendship sees what fear cannot. You've taught us all something wonderful today."
Leo waved goodbye to his unusual new friends. Every day after school, he returned to the palm tree, and every day, magical friends appeared—because Leo knew that the best adventures begin with an open heart.
And sometimes, the most wonderful friends are the ones you least expect to meet.
