The Zombie Who Needed Papayas

Barnaby was a golden dog with floppy ears and a nose that could smell magic from three gardens away. Every morning, he'd trot through Sunny Village, his tail wagging like a happy flag.

One bright morning, Barnaby's nose twitched. Something smelled sweeter than usual—like sunshine mixed with honey. He followed the scent to Mrs. Chen's garden, where the most enormous papaya grew, glowing with a soft, golden light.

But Barnaby wasn't the only visitor.

A small figure sat beside the papaya tree. It looked like a boy, but his skin was pale gray and his movements were slow and sleepy. A zombie!

Barnaby's ears perked up. Zombies were supposed to be scary, but this one looked sad. His gray cheeks were streaked with shiny tears.

"Hello," said Barnaby in his special dog-whisper voice. The zombie looked up. His eyes were the color of storm clouds, but they weren't scary at all. They were lonely.

"I'm Zippet," the zombie whispered. "I used to live in the magical garden, but I forgot how to be colorful. Now I'm all gray and slow."

Barnaby's heart squeezed. He knew exactly what to do.

The golden dog nudged the glowing papaya with his nose. The fruit tumbled down, and Barnaby gently rolled it to Zippet.

"Eat this," Barnaby seemed to say. Zippet took a bite. Juice dripped down his chin—golden, sweet, warm like sunshine.

Something magical happened.

Color flooded back into Zippet's cheeks. His gray skin turned rosy pink. His stormy eyes sparkled like blueberries. He jumped up, no longer slow and sleepy, but full of energy.

"The papaya magic!" Zippet cheered. "It remembered how to make me colorful again!"

Barnaby barked happily. From that day on, Zippet was never gray again. And every morning, Barnaby and Zippet shared a papaya breakfast under the golden sun, because friendship, they discovered, was the most powerful magic of all.

Sometimes the scariest-looking problems just need a little sweetness—and a good friend—to solve them.
