The Zombie Who Needed a Hug

Lily had the most wild and tangled hair in all of Willow Creek. It sprouted in every direction like a dandelion gone to seed, and she loved it that way. Her cat Marmalade—who was the color of a ripe orange—always curled up in the messy strands and purred like a tiny motor.

One autumn afternoon, Lily and Marmalade were exploring the woods behind their house when they spotted something strange. A small figure stood near an old orange tree, moving in a jerky, stiff way. Its skin was greenish-gray, and its clothes were tattered.

A zombie!

Marmalade's fur puffed up like a prickly orange ball. But Lily didn't run. She noticed the zombie wasn't scary at all—it was trying to reach an orange that had fallen on the ground, but its stiff fingers kept missing.

"Do you need help?" Lily asked, stepping closer.

The zombie looked up with the saddest eyes Lily had ever seen. It nodded slowly.

Lily picked up the orange and placed it gently in the zombie's hand. As their fingers touched, something magical happened. The zombie's greenish skin began to glow with warm golden light. Its stiff movements became smooth and graceful.

"Thank you," said the zombie, whose name turned out to be Zara. "I was cursed by a lonely wizard who said no one would ever want to be my friend. He said friends only came to people who were perfect and smooth and polished."

Lily laughed, shaking her wild hair. "Well, he was wrong! Marmalade isn't perfect—she knocks over cups and nips at toes, but she's my best friend. And my hair isn't smooth and perfect either!"

Zara smiled, and her whole face lit up like sunshine. "Will you be my friend too?"

"Always!" Lily said, hugging Zara tight.

From that day on, Zara wasn't a zombie anymore. The curse had been broken—not by magic potions or powerful spells, but by something much stronger: kindness, friendship, and the courage to see past appearances.

And if you ever go to Willow Creek, you might still see them there—a girl with wild hair, an orange cat, and their friend Zara, picking oranges and laughing together under the autumn sky.
