The Zombie Who Made Gardens Grow

Lily's hair was always messy—tangled and wild, like a bird's nest after a storm. Every morning, her mom tried to comb it, but Lily wiggled away. She was too busy dreaming about adventures!

One afternoon, Lily sat at the kitchen table, pushing spinach around her plate. "I hate spinach," she grumbled. Her cat, Whiskers, rubbed against her leg, purring. Her dog, Barnaby, wagged his tail, hoping for a treat to fall.

Suddenly, something strange happened in the backyard. Through the window, Lily saw a greenish figure stumbling between the tomato plants. It had floppy arms and moved slowly, like it was still waking up from a very long nap.

"What's THAT?" Lily whispered. She grabbed Whiskers and called Barnaby, and they all crept outside to investigate.

The creature was covered in vines and leaves. It looked like a zombie, but instead of being scary, it was... gardening? The zombie gently patted soil around the pepper plants. With each touch, the plants stood taller, their leaves greener.

"Hello?" Lily called out softly.

The zombie turned. Its eyes were kind and sparkly like dewdrops. It opened its mouth and spoke in a voice like rustling leaves: "I am Zola. I was a regular gardener until I fell asleep in my garden for one hundred years. The magic of the seeds I planted woke me up."

Zola looked at Lily's spinach plate still in her hand. "Ah, spinach!" Zola's eyes lit up. "The most magical vegetable of all! Spinach gives you the energy to run fast, climb high, and dream big dreams."

Lily looked at the spinach with new eyes. "Really?"

"Try it," Zola said. "And watch what happens."

Lily took a bite. It wasn't bad—it was crisp and fresh! Suddenly, she felt lighter, stronger. Her messy hair didn't matter anymore. She felt brave enough for any adventure.

"Thank you, Zola!" Lily said. "Will you teach me more about garden magic?"

Zola smiled, and together—with Whiskers watching from a sunny spot and Barnaby playing with fallen leaves—they planted spinach seeds, tomatoes, and flowers. Zola showed Lily how every seed holds magic, just waiting to grow.

That night, Lily ate all her spinach and dreamed of gardens that glowed with magic. She learned that sometimes the things we think are strange or scary might just be friends we haven't met yet—and even vegetables can be full of wonder.
