The Zombie Who Loved to Swim
Lila loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd splash into Blueberry Pond until her fingers wrinkled like raisins. But today, something strange floated near the lily pads.
It looked green and bumpy, with one arm sticking up awkwardly. "Is that... a zombie?" Lila whispered, her eyes wide.
The green thing bobbed closer. Lila wanted to run, but her feet were stuck in the muddy bottom. Then the zombie spoke—or rather, burbled.
"Blub. Blub. Hello?"
Lila tilted her head. "You can talk?"
"Of course!" The creature sat up, revealing a friendly face made entirely of pond algae and twigs. "I'm Zimbly. Are you here for swimming too?"
"You're not a scary zombie?" Lila asked, relaxing.
"Nope!" Zimbly did a little spin in the water. "I'm a pond spirit! The kids who come here just started calling me 'zombie' because I'm green and float funny. But I love swimming just like you!"
Lila grinned. "I'm Lila. Want to race to the big rock?"
Zimbly clapped his twiggy hands. "Yes! But I must warn you—I'm VERY fast!"
They spent the afternoon racing, diving for shiny pebbles, and playing tag with the dragonflies. Zimbly showed Lila how to float perfectly still, and she taught him how to do cannonballs that made the biggest splashes.
"This is the best day ever," Zimbly said as the sun began to set. "You're my first real friend who wasn't scared of me."
Lila smiled. "They just don't know you like I do. Sometimes things that seem scary at first turn out to be wonderful."
"Will you come back tomorrow?" Zimbly asked hopefully.
"Every day," Lila promised.
As she walked home, Lila realized something important: the best adventures happen when you're brave enough to say hello to things that seem different. And sometimes, a so-called zombie is just a friend waiting to be found.
