The Zombie Who Loved to Swim
Lily dreaded her swimming lessons. Every Tuesday, she'd hide behind the locker room door, heart pounding like a tiny drum. The water looked so big and scary.
Until the day she met Silas.
He appeared at the edge of the pool during her lesson — greenish skin, patchy clothes, and the most magnificent wild hair Lily had ever seen. It wasn't really hair at all, but swirly seaweed that danced in the breeze like underwater ribbons.
"Are you... a zombie?" Lily whispered, eyes wide.
Silas nodded solemnly. "But not the scary kind. I'm a swimming zombie!" He did a little hop. "I LOVE water. It makes my green skin sparkle!"
Lily's instructor, Mrs. Peters, didn't seem to notice Silas at all. It was like he was invisible to grown-ups.
"Watch this!" Silas cried, splashing into the shallow end. He didn't sink. Instead, he floated effortlessly, spinning like a happy green top. His seaweed hair fanned out like a beautiful underwater flower.
"How do you do that?" Lily asked, dipping one toe in the water.
Silas grinned, showing two crooked teeth. "Magic spinach soup!" He pulled a crumpled container from his pocket. "My zombie granny makes it. Want some? It gives you floating powers!"
Lily made a face. "Spinach? Yuck!"
"Just try it!" Silas urged. "Spinach makes zombies strong AND humans brave. It's full of swimming magic!"
Lily took a tiny bite. And... it wasn't yucky at all. It tasted like sunshine and adventure, like something wonderful was about to happen.
Suddenly, the pool didn't look so big anymore.
"That's the zombie swimming secret," Silas said with a wink. "We're not scary. We're just... a little different. And different friends make the BEST friends."
That day, Lily swam across the pool for the first time. Silas cheered from the side, his seaweed hair waving like victory flags.
Every Tuesday after that, Lily couldn't WAIT for swimming lessons. She learned that zombies could be kind, spinach could be delicious, and the things that seemed scary might just be friends you hadn't met yet.
And somewhere in the magical space between real and make-believe, a little zombie with seaweed hair and a big heart taught a little girl that courage sometimes comes in the most unexpected packages — even green ones with two crooked teeth who love spinach soup and swimming more than anything in the world.
