The Zombie Who Loved to Swim
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house in Florida. Best of all, she loved the sparkling blue pool in the backyard, surrounded by swaying palm trees that whispered secrets in the warm breeze. Every morning, Lily would go swimming, splashing and diving until her fingers turned wrinkly like raisins.
But one evening, as the sun painted the sky in shades of orange and pink, Lily spotted something strange near the pool. A green figure shuffled through the palm fronds, moving slowly and stiffly. It was a zombie! But not a scary zombie — this zombie wore flowered swim trunks and carried a bright orange rubber ducky.
"Hello," said Lily bravely. "Are you a real zombie?"
The zombie nodded, his eyes kind beneath his mossy hair. "I'm Zed," he rasped. "I used to be scary, but I discovered swimming. Now all I want to do is float."
Lily's eyes widened with wonder. "You like swimming too?"
"Love it," Zed said. "The water makes me feel light instead of heavy. But..." He looked down at his feet. "I don't have a swimming buddy. Everyone runs away when they see me."
Lily smiled. "I'll be your swimming buddy!"
Every evening that summer, Lily and Zed went swimming together. Zed taught Lily how to float perfectly still like a lily pad, and Lily taught Zed how to do cannonballs. They raced from one end of the pool to the other, and Zed always let Lily win.
One day, Zed shared a secret: "The magic of the pool changed me. When I'm in the water, I'm not a zombie anymore. I'm just Zed who loves to swim."
Lily realized something important. Being different didn't matter. What mattered was finding friends who liked the same things you did. Sometimes the most unlikely friendships were the best ones.
As summer ended, Lily had to return home. But she promised to visit next year. "Save my spot in the pool," she called.
Zed waved his orange rubber ducky, his green face beaming. "I'll be here, swimming and waiting. Because everyone deserves a friend who sees who they really are — even if they're a zombie who loves the water."
