The Zombie Who Loved to Splash

Barnaby was a small, scruffy dog with floppy ears and a big imagination. Every summer day, he would scamper down to Crystal Creek, his tail wagging like a metronome set to presto.

One hot afternoon, while Barnaby was splashing in his favorite swimming spot, he noticed something strange. From the muddy creek bed, a greenish figure slowly emerged. It had messy seaweed hair, kelp wrapped around its arms, and moved in a slow, wobbly dance.

Barnaby's ears perked up. Was this what the older dogs called a zombie?

The creature reached the surface and let out a cheerful, bubbly laugh. "Hello there, little friend! I'm Zed, and I've been watching you practice your swimming all summer!"

Zed wasn't scary at all! His eyes sparkled like creek pebbles in sunlight, and he wore a permanent, goofy grin. He explained that he was a magical zombie who had been sleeping in the creek for a hundred years, waiting for someone who loved water as much as he did.

"Would you like to see my secret?" Zed asked. With a twinkle, he tapped the water, and suddenly, tiny glowing fish began to dance around them. The creek transformed into an underwater kingdom, with colorful coral gardens and singing seashells.

Barnaby barked with joy! For weeks, they swam together every day. Zed taught Barnaby how to glide like a ray and chase moonbeams through the water. In return, Barnaby showed Zed the best spots for belly rubs and naps in sunny patches.

One evening, Zed grew quiet. "My time in this world is ending," he said, his form beginning to shimmer like morning dew. "But you gave me something wonderful—friendship and fun. I'll never forget you."

Barnaby nudged Zed's hand one last time. As Zed faded away, he left behind a single, glowing scale.

Now, whenever Barnaby goes swimming, he wears that scale around his neck on a string of seaweed. And sometimes, when the water is just right, he swears he can hear Zed's bubbly laugh, reminding him that magic and friendship can be found in the most unexpected places.

The creek wasn't just a swimming hole anymore. It was a place where a brave little dog learned that even zombies can be wonderful friends—if you have the courage to say hello.
