The Zombie Who Loved to Splash

Lily loved summer. Most of all, she loved swimming in the cool blue lake behind her house. Every morning, she'd put on her favorite red hat with the yellow flowers and rush to the water's edge.

One day, something strange splashed in the reeds. Lily peeked through the tall grass and saw a greenish boy standing near the dock. His skin was blotchy, his clothes were torn, and he walked with a wobbly shuffle. A zombie!

Lily wanted to run, but she noticed something peculiar. The zombie wasn't moaning or looking for brains. He was watching the other children swim with big, sad eyes.

"Do you want to swim?" Lily called out bravely.

The zombie nodded slowly. "But everyone runs away when they see me."

"I'm Lily," she said, stepping closer. "This is my lucky swimming hat. It helps me make friends. Want to try it?"

The zombie's eyes widened. No one had ever offered him anything before—except screams. His name was Zed, and he'd been wandering for months, lonely and misunderstood.

Lily taught Zed to swim. At first, he was stiff and awkward, but soon he was splashing and diving like a pro. The hat helped, but mostly it was Lily's kindness.

Other children watched from the shore. They saw Zed laughing and doing cannonballs. Slowly, they came closer. By afternoon, Zed was playing tag and having the best summer ever.

That evening, Lily's mom asked about her new friend.

"Zed's not scary," Lily said. "He just needed someone to give him a chance. Sometimes the things we're afraid of are just lonely, waiting for a friend."

The red hat had worked its magic again—not through enchantment, but through the courage to be kind. And Zed learned that with true friends, you can feel alive again, no matter what anyone else says.
