The Zombie Who Loved to Run
Leo loved running more than anything in the world. Every morning, he'd lace up his sneakers and race the sun down the street, past Mrs. Higgins' garden, all the way to the old oak tree at the corner of Maple Drive.
One rainy afternoon, Leo found something strange near the oak tree. It wasn't a treasure map or a lost toy. It was a zombie!
But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He was small and green, with messy hair and the most worried expression Leo had ever seen.
"I'm Zed," the zombie squeaked. "And I'm terrible at being a zombie."
Leo sat beside him. "What do you mean?"
"Zombies are supposed to stomp slowly and say 'brains' all day," Zed sighed. "But I love running! I want to feel the wind in my hair and jump over puddles and race butterflies!"
Leo's eyes widened. "That's amazing! Want to see something cool?"
He pulled out his iPhone — his dad's old one that Leo used for games. He showed Zed a video of Olympic runners flying across the finish line. Zed watched with wonder, his green face lighting up.
"They're like flying humans!" Zed cheered.
"Want to run together tomorrow?" Leo asked.
Zed shook his head sadly. "I can't. My shoelace is broken. See?" He pointed to a frayed cable trailing from his sneaker. "It's been like this for forever."
Leo smiled. "That's not a problem!"
He dug through his backpack and found his lucky rainbow shoelace — the one his grandmother had given him.
"This helped me win every race at school," Leo said, tying Zed's shoe with a double knot. "Now it's your turn."
The next morning, when Leo started his daily run, someone joined him. Zed ran beside him, grinning from ear to pointed ear. They didn't go fast at first. Zed tripped over his own feet. Leo waited. They laughed. They tried again.
By the end of the week, Zed wasn't just running — he was dancing! He leaped over cracks in the sidewalk, spun around lamp posts, and raced the wind itself.
"You're not a terrible zombie," Leo told him. "You're a runner who happens to be green."
Zed beamed. "And you're not just a runner. You're the best friend a zombie could ask for!"
From that day on, the fastest thing on Maple Drive wasn't a car or a bicycle. It was Leo and Zed, running together, proving that the best adventures happen when you follow your heart — even when it beats a little differently than everyone else's.
