The Zombie Who Loved to Play

Zippy was not like other zombies. While other zombies shuffled around saying "brains," Zippy shuffled around saying... "games!"

Every day after school, Zippy hid behind the big oak tree near the recreation center. He watched children laugh and run. His favorite was when they played padel—a fun game with racquets and a bouncy ball. Zippy would clap his green hands and do a little zombie dance whenever someone scored.

But he never joined. Who would want to play with a zombie?

One sunny afternoon, Maya spotted him. She was about to go swimming in the pool when she noticed Zippy peeking from behind the tree. Instead of running away, she waved.

"Hi! Do you want to play padel?" Maya called.

Zippy's eyes went wide. "Really? With me?"

"Sure! Everyone needs a partner."

Zippy shuffled onto the padel court. His zombie feet were perfect for quick moves! He was amazing at the game. The other children gathered to watch, and soon everyone was cheering. Zippy smiled—something zombies rarely do.

After padel, Maya asked, "Do you know how to go swimming?"

Zippy shook his head. "Zombies don't swim. We're too heavy."

"That's not true!" Maya grabbed his hand. "Come on!"

The pool sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight. Zippy dipped one green toe in the water. It felt wonderful! He splashed in, and to everyone's surprise, he floated perfectly. His zombie body was naturally buoyant!

Soon, all the children were swimming and laughing with Zippy. They played pool games and had races. Zippy was the best at floating like a log.

From that day on, Zippy was never lonely again. He played padel every Tuesday and Thursday, and went swimming every Wednesday. The children learned that sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures just want a friend. And Zippy learned that being different doesn't mean you can't belong.

Especially when you're really good at padel.
