The Zombie Who Loved to Play

zombiebearcatpadelfriend

Leo opened his toy box and pulled out Zippy, his favorite toy zombie. Zippy had green skin, one googly eye, and the biggest smile Leo had ever painted on a toy.

"Today's the day, Zippy!" Leo cheered. "We're playing padel with Mama!"

Zippy didn't answer, but Leo imagined Zippy's excited wiggle. Leo grabbed his padel racket from the corner of his room. His cat, Mochi, pounced on the racket's handle, batting at the grip with her fluffy paws.

"Not now, Mochi!" Leo laughed, gently nudging her away. "We have a tournament to win!"

Outside, the sun painted the sky in gold and pink. Mama was already at the padel court, bouncing the ball against the wall. Thwack, thwack, thwack!

"Ready, Leo?" Mama called.

"Ready!" Leo placed Zippy on the bench, exactly where a good luck charm should sit. "You watch me, Zippy. I'll make you proud!"

Leo swung his racket and hit the ball over the net. He was getting better every day! But then — SWOOSH — something brown and fuzzy lumbered from behind the trees.

Leo gasped. It was a bear! A real bear!

Mama moved slowly toward him. "Leo, come here. Now."

But the bear didn't look scary. It sat down near Zippy and watched the ball bounce. Leo noticed the bear looked lonely. Very lonely.

"Mama," Leo whispered, "I think the bear wants a friend."

The bear's brown eyes were gentle. It nudged Zippy with its nose, and Zippy tipped over like he was bowing.

Leo's heart did a happy flip. "Bear! Do you want to play padel?"

The bear grunted and stood on its hind legs, swaying side to side like it was warming up for a match.

"He can be on my team!" Leo said. Mama looked worried, but she nodded slowly.

Leo tossed the ball to the bear. The bear caught it, then flipped it onto the ground and bonked it with its paw. The ball sailed over the net!

"Good shot, Bear!" Leo cheered.

For an hour, Leo, Mama, and the bear played the most magical game of padel ever. The bear wasn't very good — it kept hitting the ball into the bushes — but Leo didn't care. He had made the best friend ever.

When the sun began to set, the bear gently nuzzled Zippy, then Leo's hand, and lumbered back into the forest.

"Will he come back?" Leo asked.

"Maybe," Mama said, hugging him. "But today, Leo, you learned something wonderful."

"What?"

"That sometimes the scariest-looking things just want someone to play with. You made a friend today — not just with a bear, but with kindness."

Leo smiled, picking up Zippy. The toy zombie's googly eye seemed to twinkle in the twilight. Zippy had been right all along: the best adventures happen when you're brave enough to say hello.
