The Zombie Who Loved to Dance
Lily loved exploring the attic of her old house. One rainy afternoon, she found something strange behind a stack of dusty boxes—a shiny golden cable that seemed to hum with energy.
Curious, she picked it up. The moment the cable touched her palm, it began to glow warmly, and sparkles danced around her fingers like fireflies. Suddenly, the cable pulled her toward the attic window, tugging gently but insistently.
Outside, in her backyard, she saw him—a zombie boy with green skin and patchwork clothes, jumping clumsily over the fence. But he wasn't scary at all. He was trying to juggle three bright red balls and kept dropping them with a silly grin.
"Hi!" Lily called out. "I'm Lily. What's your name?"
The zombie boy looked up, surprised. "I'm Zed," he said, his voice sounding like crunchy autumn leaves. "I'm looking for a friend."
"I'll be your friend!" Lily said, and the golden cable in her hand shimmered with happiness.
Zed's eyes lit up. "Do you like padel?"
"What's padel?" Lily asked.
"Only the BEST game ever!" Zed cheered, pulling a small padel racket from his pocket—it grew to full size when he tapped it. "Come play!"
They played for hours. Zed moved slowly but had perfect aim. Lily was fast but kept missing. They laughed so much that Mrs. Higgins next door came out to see what was happening.
"Mind if I join?" the old lady asked, smiling. She pulled her own padel racket from behind her back. "I was the neighborhood champion thirty years ago!"
The three of them played until sunset. As the sky turned purple and gold, Zed looked sad. "I have to go now. My cable only lets me visit on special days."
"Will you come back?" Lily asked.
Zed nodded. "Every time you laugh, every time you make a new friend, the cable will bring me closer."
He disappeared in a cloud of sparkles, but the golden cable in Lily's palm still glowed softly.
That night, Lily learned something wonderful: the best friends aren't always the ones you expect. Sometimes, they're the ones who are different from everyone else—the ones who make you laugh, teach you new games, and show you that kindness matters more than how you look.
And whenever Lily played padel in her backyard, she could feel Zed cheering her on, the golden cable humming in her pocket like a heartbeat of friendship.
