The Zombie Who Loved the Water

Lily loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd race to the crystal blue lake behind her house, her yellow swimsuit shining like the sun. The water was her special place, where she could pretend to be a mermaid exploring magical kingdoms beneath the waves.

One sunny afternoon, while practicing her underwater somersaults, Lily spotted something unusual near the old wooden dock. A pale green figure stumbled slowly along the shoreline. It had tangled hair, ragged clothes, and moved with a funny wobble. It was a zombie!

Most children would have run away screaming, but Lily was curious. She'd read stories about zombies, but this one looked sad rather than scary. His skin was slightly green, his clothes were torn, and he walked with a slow, heavy shuffle.

"Hello?" Lily called, treading water. "Are you lost?"

The zombie looked up with surprised eyes. He opened his mouth as if to speak, but only a soft groan came out. Then he pointed sadly at the sparkling water, making swimming motions with his arms.

Lily's eyes widened. "You want to swim?"

The zombie nodded vigorously!

"But... zombies can't swim, can they?" Lily wondered aloud. "Everyone says you're afraid of water."

The zombie shook his head wildly, then pointed at himself and made a diving motion. He wobbled closer to the edge, but fear made him step back. His eyes showed how badly he wanted to try.

Lily swam to shore. "I can teach you! My name's Lily. What's yours?"

The zombie smiled crookedly and pointed to a small patch of zinnia flowers nearby. "Zinnie-ah?" he groaned.

"Zinnie? That's perfect!" Lily beamed. "Okay Zinnie, let's start slow. Just put your feet in."

For an hour, Lily patiently taught Zinnie how to float, kick, and move his arms through the water. Zinnie was terrified at first, but Lily's gentle encouragement kept him trying. When he finally floated on his back like a starfish, he let out the happiest groan anyone had ever heard.

By sunset, Zinnie was swimming! He wasn't fast, but he glided through the water with a goofy, joyful grin. Other children gathered to watch, and soon everyone was cheering.

"See?" Lily told them. "Zinnie just needed a friend to believe in him. Sometimes the things we think are scary are just misunderstood."

From that day on, Zinnie the zombie could be found every afternoon, swimming happily alongside his new friends. He'd even help nervous children learn to float, showing them that anyone can overcome their fears with kindness and patience.

And Lily learned that the most magical discoveries don't happen when you run away from what you don't understand—they happen when you dive right in with an open heart.
