The Zombie Who Loved Swimming
Lily discovered the secret pool behind her grandmother's garden one hot summer afternoon. The water shimmered like liquid diamonds, surrounded by weeping willows that whispered ancient stories. But something strange floated in the middle.
It was a zombie! But not a scary one like in movies. This zombie had bright green skin that sparkled like emeralds, and the messiest, most colorful hair Lily had ever seen—rainbow strands that floated on the water like silky seaweed.
"Hello?" Lily called, stepping closer.
The zombie sat up, water dripping from its wild hair. "Finally! Someone who can see me! I'm Zola, and I've been stuck in this magical pool for seventy-three years!"
Lily gasped. "Seventy-three years? Were you... always a zombie?"
Zola laughed, a sound like tinkling bells. "No! I was once the swimming champion of the entire kingdom. But a jealous wizard turned me into a zombie and trapped me here. The only way to break the spell is to teach someone else to love swimming as much as I did."
Lily's eyes widened. "I've always wanted to learn! My parents tried to teach me, but I was too scared."
"Then you're the perfect student!" Zola splashed joyfully. "Swimming isn't about being perfect. It's about trusting the water to hold you, about dancing with the waves. Look at my hair—it's a mess because I've spent so long underwater, but the ocean doesn't mind messy hair!"
For three magical weeks, Zola taught Lily to swim. They raced across the pool, played tag with the reflection of the moon, and invented water games that made the willow trees laugh. Lily learned that the zombie wasn't scary at all—she was just lonely.
On the final day, as Lily swam her first perfect lap across the pool, Zola began to glow. The zombie form melted away like wax near a flame, revealing a beautiful young woman with flowing rainbow hair.
"Thank you," Zola whispered, her voice full of ancient magic. "You saw past what I looked like and found who I really was. That's the truest magic of all."
The pool became ordinary again, but Lily still visits every summer. Sometimes, when the light hits the water just right, she sees rainbow ripples and remembers: friendship and kindness can break any spell, even the ones that last forever.
