The Zombie Who Loved Sunshine
Maya loved swimming more than anything. Every morning, she'd dive into the crystal lake behind her house, her orange hair flowing like seaweed behind her. But today, the water felt strange—tingly and warm, like it was charged with magic.
A flash of lightning split the sky, though no storm clouds gathered. Maya surfaced to see a peculiar figure standing on the dock—a greenish boy with messy hair who looked half-asleep. A zombie!
"I'm not scary," the boy said, reading her thoughts. "I'm Zed, and I've been cursed to sleep forever unless someone shares happy dreams with me."
Maya's fear melted into curiosity. "I have happy dreams every night!"
Zed's eyes widened. "Will you share them?"
Maya nodded. "But first—you need to learn swimming! The water holds the best dreams."
Teaching Zed to swim was an adventure. He splashed like a clumsy puppy, his zombie arms flailing until they discovered rhythm together. The orange sunset painted the water gold as they practiced, and with each stroke, Zed became less green and more rosy-cheeked.
That night, Maya dreamed of flying over candy mountains. When she woke, Zed was beaming—fully alive!
"Thank you," he whispered, his hair now shiny brown. "Your friendship broke the spell."
They swam together every day after school, and Maya learned that the scariest things often just need a friend to show their true colors. Sometimes, the most magical friendships come from the most unexpected places.
