The Zombie Who Loved Sunshine
Lila was playing in her garden when she noticed something strange. The papaya tree, usually full of bright orange fruit, looked sad. Its leaves drooped toward the ground, and the soil around it was dry as dust. 'You need water,' Lila whispered, grabbing her watering can. But as she stepped closer, she froze. A figure was shuffling near the tree—a pale, greenish creature with tangled hair and clothes that looked like fallen leaves. Lila's heart raced. Was this a zombie? She'd heard stories about them, but never thought she'd see one! The creature moaned, 'Wa-ter...' Its voice sounded crackly, like dry autumn leaves. Lila noticed it wasn't scary at all. Its eyes were kind, and it seemed to be trying to help the papaya tree by collecting morning dew in cupped leaves. 'You're not scary!' Lila said bravely. The creature looked surprised. 'I'm Zim,' it whispered. 'I was the garden's guardian spirit, but I forgot my purpose after a storm made me sleep for too long.' Lila realized Zim wasn't a zombie at all—it was a forgotten magical helper! 'Let's help the tree together,' she said, handing Zim her watering can. They watered the papaya tree until its leaves perked up. Suddenly, lightning flashed across the sky, followed by gentle rain. Zim's pale green skin began to glow, and his tangled hair smoothed into flowing waves of silver. The rain had awakened his magic! 'Thank you, Lila,' Zim said, his voice now musical like chimes. 'You helped me remember who I am.' The papaya tree blossomed with bright orange flowers, and Zim danced in the rain, no longer zombie-like but radiant and strong. From that day on, Lila and Zim tended the garden together, and she learned that sometimes things that seem scary are just misunderstood—and that kindness can awaken magic in anyone.
