The Zombie Who Loved Spinach

Lily loved running through her grandmother's magical garden, especially past the towering palm tree that swayed in the warm breeze. Its leaves whispered secrets, and Lily always waved back.

One afternoon, while chasing butterflies near the palm, Lily spotted something strange. A lumpy green figure was slowly — very slowly — planting something in the dirt. Lily froze. Was it a zombie?

She remembered stories about zombies: scary creatures who stumbled around saying "brains." But this one was kneeling carefully in the dirt, patting soil around tiny seedlings.

"Hello?" Lily called out, her voice trembling just a little.

The figure looked up. It had messy green hair, dirt-smudged cheeks, and the kindest eyes Lily had ever seen. "Oh! Hello there," it said, smiling shyly. "I'm Zummy. I'm a zombie, but not the scary kind. I'm a gardening kind."

Lily stepped closer. "What are you planting?"

"Spinach!" Zummy said proudly. "Magic spinach. It makes you brave when you eat it."

Lily giggled. "Spinach makes you strong, maybe. But brave?"

"Watch." Zummy plucked a bright green leaf and offered it to her. "Try it."

Lily took a tiny bite. Suddenly, she felt a warm tingle in her chest. The garden seemed brighter. The palm tree's whispers became clear words: *Be kind to everyone, even those who seem different.*

"Zummy," Lily said, "why were you planting all alone?"

"Everyone runs away when they see me," Zummy said sadly. "They think I'm scary."

"That's not fair," Lily declared. "You're the nicest zombie I've ever met!"

Every day after school, Lily came running back to the garden. She helped Zummy water the magical spinach. They told stories under the palm tree while the leaves sang them gentle songs.

When other children saw Lily laughing with Zummy, they stopped running away. Soon, the garden was full of kids planting their own magical vegetables alongside their new zombie friend.

Lily learned something important that summer: sometimes the scariest-looking things are actually the most wonderful. You just have to be brave enough to say hello.

And the magical spinach? It really did work — because being brave enough to make an unexpected friend is the bravest thing of all.
