The Zombie Who Loved Spinach
In the sleepy town of Willowbrook, children played tag until the streetlights flickered on. But nobody played near the old house on Pumpkin Hill. That's where the zombie lived—or so everyone whispered.
Lily was the fastest runner in her third-grade class. She could zip across the playground like a shooting star. But today, she needed to be faster than ever. The annual Willowbrook Race was tomorrow, and her legs felt tired.
"I'll never win," she sighed, resting near the forbidden hill. That's when she heard it: a gentle humming sound, like a happy bumblebee.
Curious, Lily crept up the overgrown path and peeked through the rusty gate. There, in a garden bursting with flowers, stood a green-skinned figure in ragged clothes—the zombie! But he wasn't shambling or moaning. He was dancing!
The zombie twirled around a garden patch, sprinkling water on vibrant green plants. Then he did something shocking: he plucked a leaf and ate it with delight.
"Spinach!" he declared, noticing Lily. "Would you like some? It's my special recipe!"
Lily stepped closer, trembling. "You're the zombie..."
"I'm Zed!" He grinned, his smile surprisingly warm. "And this is my running spinach. Want to try?"
Something about Zed's kind eyes made Lily trust him. She took the leaf and chewed. It tasted sweet and sparkly, like a sunny morning wrapped in a leaf. Suddenly, her legs tingled with energy.
"Wow!" she gasped. "I feel like I could run forever!"
Zed clapped his hands. "That's the magic! Food gives power, but kindness makes it stronger. Every day, I tend this garden with love. The spinach shares that love with whoever eats it."
Lily practiced running with Zed all afternoon. He taught her that true strength comes from friendship, not just speed. When she left, Zed gave her a bag of enchanted spinach for the race.
The next day, Lily zoomed around the track like never before. But something else happened: she waved at every runner, cheered when others fell, and even helped a friend finish the race. She didn't just win first place; she won hearts.
From then on, children visited Zed's garden. They learned that the zombie wasn't scary at all—he was magical, kind, and grew the most wonderful spinach in Willowbrook.
And whenever Lily needed extra energy, she knew just where to find it: in a garden on Pumpkin Hill, where friendship grows alongside the running spinach, and where a zombie taught a whole town that some things aren't at all what they seem.
