The Zombie Who Loved Spinach
In a secret garden behind Old Man Miller's house, Zara and Leo discovered something magical. A bolt of lightning had struck the pumpkin patch during last night's storm, and now the pumpkins glowed with golden light. But that wasn't the strangest part.
A green figure stumbled out from between the vines. It looked like a zombie, but not the scary kind from movies. This zombie had flowers growing from his shoulders and wore a patched-up jacket made of leaves.
"Are you going to eat our brains?" Leo asked, hiding behind Zara.
The zombie shook his head slowly. "Brains no... SPINACH yes!" He held out a hand, and there, nestled in his palm, grew the most beautiful emerald spinach leaf anyone had ever seen.
Zara gasped. "You're a garden zombie!"
Every morning, the children brought fresh water from the stream to water their new friend, who they named Greenie. The water made him dance and wiggle like a happy willow tree. In return, Greenie taught them about the magic vitamins hidden in different vegetables.
"Carrot good for eyes," Greenie explained in his rumbly voice. "Spinach make muscles STRONG!" He flexed his skinny arms, and daisies bloomed from his elbows.
One afternoon, a bully named Jake knocked over Zara's lemonade stand. Greenie lumbered forward, but instead of being scary, he offered Jake something from his pocket—a magical vitamin-berry that made Jake feel so happy he apologized and helped rebuild the stand.
"Maybe you're not a zombie," Zara said, hugging Greenie's mossy knee. "Maybe you're just a friend who looks different."
Greenie smiled, and lightning bugs flashed in his eyes like tiny stars.
That summer, every child in the neighborhood learned to love spinach, thanks to Greenie's magical recipe. And Zara and Leo discovered the best lesson of all: true friends come in all shapes, sizes, and shades of green.
