The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Lily lived on an island where palm trees danced in the warm breeze and papayas grew as big as your head. Every morning, she would pick the ripest, sweetest papaya for breakfast.
One day, while walking to her favorite palm tree, Lily saw something strange. A figure was shambling toward her, moving slowly with stiff arms. It looked like... a zombie!
Lily's heart thumped. She had heard scary stories about zombies. But then she noticed something odd. This zombie wasn't groaning or looking for brains. It was sniffing the air, following the delicious smell of her papaya.
"Hello?" Lily called out, her voice trembling just a little.
The zombie froze. It looked at her with big, sad eyes. Then it pointed at the papaya in her hand and made a soft, hungry sound.
Lily looked closer. This wasn't a scary zombie at all. It was just someone very, very hungry and maybe a bit lost. She remembered what her grandmother always said: "Sometimes the scariest things just need a friend."
"Would you like some papaya?" Lily asked, holding out the fruit.
The zombie's eyes widened. It took the papaya gently and took a bite. Juice dripped down its chin as a smile spread across its face. The zombie's arms became less stiff. Its walk became bouncier. With every bite, the zombie looked more and more like a regular boy.
"I'm Mango," the boy said between bites. "A wizard put a spell on me when I wouldn't share my favorite tree. He said I would stay a zombie until someone shared with me first."
Lily grinned. "Well, Mango, we're going to be great friends. And I know where the best papayas grow."
Under the swaying palm tree, Lily and Mango ate papayas together. The wizard's spell was broken not by magic words or special potions, but by kindness and friendship. And sometimes, Lily would remind Mango, the scariest monsters are just friends you haven't met yet who really, really like fruit.
