The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Lily lived in a house at the edge of the world, where the magical cable car would arrive exactly at sunset every Friday. The cable car wasn't like the ones in the city—this one sparkled with tiny lights and floated on invisible rails, carrying passengers to the Mystery Island that appeared only when the moon was full.
One evening, Lily's grandmother pressed a shiny papaya into her hands. "Take this," she whispered. "You'll know why."
Lily climbed into the cable car as it chimed softly. Up, up, up it soared, carrying her through clouds that tasted like strawberry dreams. When she arrived on Mystery Island, everything glowed—the sand sparkled like sugar, the trees hummed gentle melodies, and the flowers changed colors when she walked past them.
That's when she saw him—a greenish figure shuffling slowly toward her, arms stretched forward. A zombie! Lily's heart pounded. She'd heard stories about zombies. They were supposed to be scary, right?
But this zombie stopped and blinked at her with large, kind eyes. He was covered in papaya leaves and looked more tired than terrifying. "H-h-hello," he stammered. "I'm Zed."
Lily remembered her grandmother's gift. "Would you like a papaya?"
Zed's eyes widened. The zombie who everyone thought was scary simply loved papayas more than anything in the world. He explained that he shuffled slowly because he was always sleepy from tending his magical papaya garden all night, making the fruit extra sweet for children who visited the island.
"Why do you look like a zombie?" Lily asked.
Zed smiled. "Because I was born on Halloween, and my parents thought it was funny. But really, I'm just the island's gardener."
They sat together, eating the sweetest papaya Lily had ever tasted, while the stars danced around them. She learned that sometimes things that seem scary are actually wonderful, if you just give them a chance.
Every full moon after that, Lily took the cable car to visit her friend Zed. And she always brought papayas, because the best friendships grow from sharing what you love with someone unexpected.
