The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Maya loved swimming more than anything. Every summer, she'd dive into the crystal blue water behind her house, exploring the magical underwater world.
One sunny afternoon, while swimming near the rocks, Maya spotted something bright orange floating in the water. She popped her head up and gasped—a papaya! But this wasn't just any papaya. It was glowing softly, like it held magic inside.
Suddenly, something strange emerged from the water. It moved slowly, with arms stretched out stiff in front of it. Its skin looked pale and wrinkly, and bright orange seaweed draped around its shoulders like a messy wig.
Maya's eyes went wide. A zombie!
But this zombie didn't want brains. It reached toward the papaya with both hands, making soft 'mmm' sounds.
'Wait!' Maya called out. 'You want papaya?'
The zombie froze. Slowly, it nodded.
Maya grabbed the magical papaya and split it open with a rock. The inside was even brighter orange, and it smelled like sunshine and happiness. She held out half to the creature.
The zombie's pale face stretched into the biggest, friendliest smile Maya had ever seen. It took the papaya and took a giant bite.
'Delicious!' it said, and Maya nearly jumped. 'My name is Zara. I'm not a zombie—I just walk funny because I'm always thinking so hard about what I want to eat that I forget to move my feet properly!'
Maya laughed. 'I'm Maya, and I think we're going to be great friends.'
That summer, Maya and Zara spent every day swimming together. Zara showed Maya secret underwater caves filled with bioluminescent fish. Maya taught Zara how to do cannonballs off the rocks. They shared papayas every afternoon, watching the sunset paint the sky orange.
And whenever other kids ran away, frightened by Zara's 'zombie walk,' Maya would just smile and say, 'That's my friend. She's not scary—she's just hungry!'
Maya learned that the scariest things can become the most wonderful friends, if you're brave enough to say hello first. Sometimes, zombies aren't monsters at all. Sometimes, they're just friends who haven't met you yet.
