The Zombie Who Loved Papayas

Lily discovered the secret pool behind her grandmother's garden on a hot summer day. The water shimmered like liquid sapphires, and something strange floated near the edge – a pale green creature with seaweed hair and sleepy eyes.

"Aaargh," it groaned, sitting up slowly. "I'm Zombadoo. I've been sleeping in this pool for one hundred years."

Lily wasn't scared. Zombadoo wasn't scary – just very, very slow. He blinked his eyes three times before yawning.

"What wakes you up?" Lily asked.

Zombadoo sniffed the air. "Papayas," he whispered dreamily. "Golden papayas from the tree beyond the ridge."

Lily's eyes widened. Her grandmother had told stories about the old cable system – ropes and pulleys that once connected the garden to the distant ridge. She found the rusty cable hidden beneath vines, and with Zombadoo's sleepy instructions, she repaired it.

For a week, Lily sent papayas across the cable. Each fruit that arrived made Zombadoo a little less pale, a little less slow. His green skin turned rosy. His eyes brightened.

"Why were you sleeping so long?" Lily asked one day, as Zombadoo finally climbed out of the pool, dripping sparkles.

"I forgot how wonderful being awake could be," he said. "You taught me that friendship and papayas make life worth living. Now I can show you magic."

Zombadoo touched the pool's surface, and the water turned into a slide of rainbow colors. They slid down together, laughing, and discovered an underground world of glowing crystals and singing fish.

"I'll never leave a friend sleeping alone again," Lily promised.

"And I'll never forget," Zombadoo smiled, "that sometimes, all a zombie needs is a papaya and a friend."
