The Zombie Who Loved Papayas

Lily loved summer days at the community pool. She was always the first one **running** toward the sparkling blue water, her flip-flops slapping against the pavement.

One Tuesday, something strange happened. Lily's favorite floppy purple **hat** blew off her head and landed beside the pool fence. When she reached for it, she saw something green and patchy crouching behind the garbage cans.

It looked like a **zombie** – but not the scary kind from movies. This zombie had sad eyes and was reaching toward a discarded papaya half in the grass.

"Are you... okay?" Lily whispered.

The zombie nodded slowly. Its name was Zed, and it explained that before becoming a zombie, papayas had been its absolute favorite fruit. Now it couldn't remember how they tasted.

Lily's heart felt funny. She remembered her mom saying, "True friends help each other, even when it's hard."

"I'll help you taste papaya again!" Lily declared.

But how? The zombie couldn't go into the pool area. Everyone would scream.

Lily had an idea. She sneaked a whole papaya from her lunchbox and met Zed behind the fence. But Zed's zombie fingers were too clumsy to peel it. Lily carefully cut slices and held them up.

Zed took a tiny bite. Its green face lit up. "Sweet! Like sunshine!"

Every day that week, Lily brought papayas. In return, Zed taught her how to do zombie dances that made her laugh so hard she snorted lemonade out her nose.

On the last day of summer, Zed handed Lily a small smooth stone painted with a papaya.

"Friends forever," it said.

Lily still has that stone. And sometimes, when she's eating papaya at the **pool**, she thinks of her friend Zed and learns that the best friends aren't always the ones you expect – sometimes they're the ones who need you most.
