The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Lily loved summer days at her grandmother's house. Behind the old cottage sat a shimmering blue pool surrounded by tropical flowers. But Lily's favorite spot was the papaya tree near the garden gate, heavy with sweet orange fruit.
One hot afternoon, Lily swam to the bottom of the pool and discovered something magical—a glowing underwater door! She swam through it and surfaced in a secret grotto she had never seen before.
There, sitting on a mossy rock, was a green-skinned creature with messy hair and stitches on his knees. He looked like a zombie, but instead of being scary, he was carefully arranging papaya slices on a leaf plate.
"Hello!" Lily said, surprised. "Are you... a zombie?"
The creature looked up with sad, friendly eyes. "I'm Zombardo, but please don't run away. Everyone always runs away because I look different."
Lily stayed. "I'm not scared. But what are you doing with all that papaya?"
Zombardo smiled. "I'm making a welcome feast! I live here alone, and I hoped someday someone would come visit. Papayas are my favorite—they taste like sunshine and magic."
Lily realized Zombardo wasn't scary at all. He was just lonely. She sat beside him and shared the papaya feast. They laughed and played games by the underground pool until the sun began to set.
"Will you come back tomorrow?" Zombardo asked hopefully.
"Every day," Lily promised. "And I'll bring my friends too. They need to meet the kindest zombie in the world."
As Lily swam back through the magical door, she learned something important: sometimes the scariest-looking people have the biggest hearts, and true friendship is found not in how someone looks, but in how they make you feel.
