The Zombie Who Loved Papayas

Leo loved his magical backyard in Hawaii. Every morning, he would sit beneath the giant palm tree that swayed like a dancing green umbrella, eating sweet papaya for breakfast. The papayas were his favorite—golden outside, sunset-orange inside, and sweeter than sunshine.

But one stormy afternoon, something extraordinary happened. Lightning flashed across the purple sky—CRACK! BOOM!—and suddenly, a strange figure stumbled out from behind the palm tree.

Leo's heart thumped like a drum. It looked like a zombie! Greenish skin, creaky movements, tangled hair. Leo hid behind his favorite papaya tree, peering through the waxy leaves.

But then he noticed something strange. The zombie wasn't scary at all. It was sniffing the air, following the delicious smell of ripe papaya. It reached for a fallen fruit with stiff but gentle fingers, almost like it was asking permission.

Just then, a bear cub waddled out from the bushes! Leo gasped. He had never seen a bear in Hawaii before. The cub wobbled toward the zombie, curious and unafraid.

The zombie froze, then carefully offered the papaya to the little bear. The cub took it happily and munched, juice dripping down its chin.

Leo stepped out from hiding. "You're not scary at all, are you?" he said softly.

The zombie shook its head slowly. Its eyes were kind, not spooky at all.

"My name is Leo," he said. "What's yours?"

The zombie opened its mouth and made a creaky sound: "Zzzz... Zumba."

"Nice to meet you, Zumba," Leo smiled. "Want more papaya?"

Together, Leo, Zumba the friendly zombie, and the bear cub shared papayas under the palm tree while the storm passed. Zumba told them (in creaky words) that lightning had brought him from a magical island where zombies were gentle guardians of fruit trees.

"That's why you love papayas so much!" Leo laughed.

When the sun came out, Zumba had to return home. But he promised to visit whenever lightning struck. And he did—every stormy afternoon, Zumba would appear, and they would feast on papayas together.

Leo learned that day: sometimes, things that seem scary are actually wonderful. You just have to be brave enough to say hello.
