The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Lila loved visiting her grandmother's house in the islands. The best part was the backyard, where a giant palm tree stretched its leaves toward the sky like green fireworks caught in mid-bloom. Every morning, Lila would sit beneath it and dream.
One day, she heard a rustling sound. Deep in the palm tree's shadow, something was moving. Lila peeked closer. A green figure shambled out — a zombie! Or at least, that's what it looked like. Its skin was the color of seaweed, and it walked funny, like its feet were asleep.
Lila wanted to run, but curiosity held her still. The zombie held something round and golden in its hands. A papaya! It took a bite, juice dribbling down its chin.
"Want some?" it asked. Its voice sounded like leaves whispering in the wind.
Lila blinked. Zombies were supposed to be scary, not fruit-sharing.
"I'm not a zombie," the creature said, as if reading her thoughts. "I'm a Palmtree Spirit. We just look... tired because we guard the trees all night."
The Spirit explained that zombies in stories were nothing like guardians of nature. "Real zombies would never share a papaya," it said, handing her the sweetest, sun-warmed slice. "But friends always do."
Lila took it. The papaya tasted like sunshine and magic.
"Will I see you again?" she asked.
"Every dawn," the Palmtree Spirit promised. "But remember — not everything that looks scary is scary. Sometimes things are just misunderstood."
That summer, Lila learned the best lesson of all: kindness unlocks the most wonderful secrets. And every morning, beneath the swaying palm, she and her unusual friend shared papayas and watched the sunrise paint the sky gold.
