The Zombie Who Loved Papayas
Lila loved swimming more than anything in the world. Every morning, she would slip into the crystal-blue lake behind her house, her toes wiggling in the cool water. But today, something magical happened.
As Lila dove beneath the surface, she noticed something peculiar. A small green figure was sitting on a rock at the bottom of the lake. It looked like a zombie—green skin, tattered clothes—but instead of being scary, it was crying.
Lila swam closer. The little zombie looked up with sad eyes. "I'm not a scary zombie," it squeaked. "I'm Zee, and I'm just lonely. And very hungry."
Lila's heart went out to him. "What do you like to eat?"
Zee's face lit up. "Papayas! They're my favorite. But I can't reach them. They grow on the island in the middle of the lake, and I'm too slow to climb trees."
Lila had an idea. She grabbed a rope from the old boat dock and tied it to a sturdy branch. Zee held on while Lila swam powerfully, pulling him across the sparkling water to the papaya island.
Together, they gathered the sweet orange fruits. Zee took a bite and his whole body wiggled with joy. "This is the best day ever!" he cheered. "Thank you for helping me."
Lila smiled. "I thought zombies were scary, but you're the nicest friend I've ever met."
Zee giggled. "That's the thing about zombies—or anyone, really. You can't judge someone by how they look. It's what's inside that matters."
From that day on, Lila and Zee spent every afternoon swimming together, sharing papayas, and having underwater adventures. And Lila learned that the best friendships often come from the most unexpected places—sometimes even from a little green zombie at the bottom of a lake.
